Restaurant Spotlight: Colette Wine Bistro in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Located right in Porter Square, this French restaurant is nestled inside the Porter Square Hotel and is a true gem. We reserved a table for two on a Friday night and the ambience couldn’t have been more perfect. We walked into the Porter Square Hotel and immediately to the left was Colette. The lights were dim and the interior had a color profile of pink, turquoise, and black. For drinks, my boyfriend and I started with a glass of wine for him and a dirty Belvedere martini for me. We started with the mussels along with the Duck Confit & Mushroom. The mussels were the perfect level of savory, served in beer broth, laden (fatty bacon), herbs, and shallots. The Duck Confit & Mushroom was served on a puff-pasty and was truly for my mushroom lovers having been cooked with 3 different types of mushrooms – shiitake, cremini, and oyster. Between the two of us, this was the perfect amount of food and balance for the palette.
As for entrees, I got the Duck Margret (cooked medium rare) while Nick, my boyfriend, got the Steak Frites – also cooked medium rare. And both delicious were absolutely DELICIOUS. I mean the flavors coming from both dishes were completely unmatched and each with its unique flavor profile. Both the duck and steak were cooked to a juicy and tender perfection. Starting with the duck, this was served on top of mashed sweet potatoes, haricot verts (very similar to green beans), and pearl onions. The sweetness of the mashed potatoes and the savory marinade of the duck was the perfect combination of sweet and savory. As for the steak frites, these were glazed with Bordelaise sauce, a classic French sauce made with red wine, caramelized onions, and butter. Each bite of the steak frites with the Bordelaise sauce was a flavor bomb in my mouth. This dish was served with a side of fries that were cooked to perfection.
By the time it was time for dessert, we were so full but let me tell you the dessert menu looked phenomenal. If we had room in our bellies, we 100% would have dug ourselves into some dessert.
